KOSTENOPBOUW

Waarom kost een thuisbatterij wat hij kost?

Goedkoper kan altijd. Maar naast de batterij zelf betaalt u ook voor vakmanschap, voorbereiding, bereikbaarheid en een bedrijf dat er over tien jaar nog is. Zie hieronder precies waar uw geld naartoe gaat.

Cost breakdown

What are you actually paying for?

We use an example price of € 10.000 including VAT for a complete home battery installation. Excluding VAT, that is € 8.264. We divide that amount over everything needed to install a battery properly and keep it working well for years. Switch parts off and see how a "cheaper" quote comes about.

Cheaper is possible

Why is someone else cheaper?

What is usually missing

A lower price almost never comes from the battery itself being cheaper: the technology costs every installer roughly the same. The difference lies in what is arranged around the battery. No site survey beforehand, no reserve for faults and warranty, no buffer for setbacks. You do not see that on the quote, but you do the moment something goes wrong.

A home battery lasts 10 to 15 years. So the question is not only what it costs today, but also who will still be around in five years to maintain it.

The one-person business with a van

A self-employed installer can work more cheaply thanks to lower fixed costs. Many self-employed professionals do excellent work. But when one person runs the entire business, availability and reserves are limited too.

  • What happens in case of illness, holidays or a full schedule?
  • Is money set aside for warranty work in five years?
  • Who answers the phone when the battery stops working in winter?
  • Will the company still exist when you need the warranty?
Facts from the solar industry

What happens when an installer disappears

In 2022 the Dutch solar market grew explosively: the number of installers almost doubled. Then demand collapsed. To keep working, many installers started a price war. They won jobs at prices that left no room for service, warranty or a buffer. The owner of BonGo Solar, then one of the largest installers in the Netherlands, also pointed at competitors selling below a healthy price when it went bankrupt.

Cheap was the only selling point

Those who chose the lowest price in those years often got a tidy installation. But when price is the only selling point, nothing is set aside for later. If the installer goes bankrupt, you can forget about your warranty: nobody else voluntarily takes over that obligation.

Installers that went bankrupt, and what it meant for their customers

Dozens of customers paid thousands of euros for solar panels that were never installed. According to a lawyer, they will get little back: wages and tax debts come first.

    BonGo Solar, Novavolt & Koolen

One of the largest installers in the Netherlands. A large number of customers with open orders and deposits had to register with the receiver. Because BonGo and Novavolt were members of the SGZE guarantee fund, deposits were covered up to a maximum of 30% or € 3,000.

An exception with a good outcome: another installer bought the customer base and took over the remaining warranties. Usually that does not happen.

What a bankruptcy means if you are already a customer

  • The installation warranty lapses. Nobody repairs an error in the connection or meter cupboard free of charge any more.
  • Deposits paid are often lost. As a consumer you are at the back of the queue with the receiver: wages, the tax authority and the bank come first.
  • The manufacturer's warranty usually remains, but you need a new installer for diagnosis and replacement. They simply charge the full rate.
  • Monitoring, updates and fault service stop. The battery that seemed cheapest becomes the most expensive at the first fault.
  • Techniek Nederland also warns of fraudsters posing as the buyer of a bankrupt installer and demanding immediate payment.

And the SGZE guarantee fund?

The Stichting Garantiefonds Zon & Energie (SGZE) is the oldest guarantee fund in the industry. In case of bankruptcy, it covers your deposit up to a maximum of 30% of the purchase price or € 3,000, and it handles manufacturer warranties. But far from all installers are members, the fund does not refund a fully lost purchase price, and it does not repair errors in the installation itself. So always ask whether and how your installer is a member.

Our choice

A fair price is not a luxury. It is a precondition.

Ask every installer this

  • Who helps me if there is a fault in three years?
  • How is the warranty arranged if the installer stops?
  • Do you carry out a technical survey of my meter cupboard beforehand?
  • Do you work with your own certified technicians?
  • Is your company accredited, insured and registered with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK)?
  • How much deposit do you ask, and is it protected?
